Surviving and Thriving: Wellness Strategies
High levels of stress are affecting teacher health and overall well-being, resulting in teacher burnout, lack of engagement, job dissatisfaction, poor performance, and even teacher turnover. If a teacher is unable to manage their own stress adequately, their instruction suffers, ultimately impacting student well-being and achievement. It's time that we prioritize staff wellness.

In this session, participants will explore trauma-informed practices grounded in research and the conditions of chronic stress on the brain, and discover strategies for supporting themselves and each other's social and emotional competencies at school and beyond.

Why Students Need to Understand Their Own Learner Variability
There is no such thing as an average learner. Helping students understand that they each bring a unique constellation of strengths and challenges to the learning process empowers them to leverage their strengths, learn from their mistakes, and advocate for their needs. This supports developing a learner mindset and understanding how and when to use technology to support learning effectively.

In this session, we'll explore our guide for teaching students about learner variability and dive into lessons created by VILS coach Renee Dawson on how to teach middle schoolers about learner variability.

Classroom Collaboration for Results
This session will focus on what collaborative learning can add to classroom practice. It'll tackle the topic of how to ensure that students share an intellectual space for learning--not just have their desks pushed together. It's important because collaboration is a 21st Century Skill and part of Next Generation Science Standards. Done right, it can bring social benefits such as a supportive place to try out new ideas, psychological benefits such as increasing self-esteem, and academic benefits such as promoting critical thinking and active learning to improve student results. You’ll leave with tips for setting up your classroom to be a collaboration zone, how to support collaborative talk, rubrics for assessing what’s happening during collaboration, and how to best design collaborative learning tasks.

In this session, participants will learn the difference between collaboration and cooperation. Participants will also learn tricks to ensure it is working in your classroom and helping your students learn, including what kinds of tasks are good for collaboration, how to structure groups with equity in mind, and how to assess what is happening during collaboration.

Preparing to Teach All Students in a Globally Connected World
With a rise in diversity across the United States comes a rise in diverse populations of students in our classrooms. By integrating engaging, relevant content that shows respect for all students into their courses, educators can meet the needs of their diverse communities. Digital Promise, in partnership with ACTE, has created free professional development modules and teaching resources to assist educators in getting to know their students and then teaching through the lens of global competence to be more inclusive in the classroom. This session will share these tools as well as strategies to help you integrate global content into your curriculum and prepare students for our interconnected world.

In this session, participants will learn about how to better engage students from diverse backgrounds in their learning by first getting to know them and about the wealth of free resources that exist to support educators in this work.
